A plane crashes on a deserted island—the only survivors, a group of schoolboys. Marooned and left to their own devices without adults or rules, their fragile sense of order begins to collapse. Read and analyzed by middle and high school students for decades, the book’s symbolism reveals much about human nature and raises the question, “How thin is the veneer of ‘civilization’?”
