Step Back In Time At Michie Tavern
What if you could drive just over an hour from Richmond, and go back
200 years in time? Visitors to Michie Tavern get to experience just
that.
Michie Tavern was established in 1784 but Scotsman William Michie, and has been accomodating travelers ever since. Lodging is no longer available, but take heart because hearty fare, based on 18th century recipes, is available to 'refuel' the weary traveler.
The Tavern's dining room is called the Ordinary, and is a rustic setting with servers dressed in period attire. The Ordinary features 'cafeteria' style dining, with choice of fried chicken, pork barbecue, black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, green bean salad, potato salad, whole baby beets, cole slaw, biscuits, cornbread, and fruit cobbler. During the winter months the regular buffet choices are supplemented with hot green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and homemade garden vegetable soup.
The food is delicious, and well worth the drive. Be aware that while the Ordinary is open year-round, only a mid-day meal is offered with seating from 11:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. April-October, & 11:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. November-March. Major credit cards are accepted, and reservations are only taken in advance for groups of 15 or more.
In addition to fine dining, Michie Tavern offers historical tours at the Tavern-Museum, and shopping adventures in the General Store, the Tavern Gift Shop, and the Clothier Shop. In the shops you will find an array of Virginia-made products such as wines, jams/jellies, candies and stone ground flours, meals and mixes, gift ideas for the history buff, period clothing and patterns, shawls, scarves, hats, colonial pockets, handkerchiefs and haversacks.
